SEC Football Scores Week 4 2014

Mississippi State

Of all the SEC Football Scores Week 4, this one may have come as the biggest surprise to fans.  A huge win for the Mississippi State Bulldogs on the road at night in Death Valley, Mississippi State scored on their opening possession and put it in the hands of their defense.  MSU Defense shut out LSU in the first quarter and held them to only a field goal in the second quarter.  In true LSU fashion, Tigers staged what looked to be a heroic fourth quarter comeback.  Entering the fourth quarter 31 – 10, LSU scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter and held the Bulldogs to only a field goal, but came up short having their Hail Mary pass intercepted on the goal line in the final seconds of the game.

Auburn

Number 5 Auburn played in a mind-numbingly loud Kansas State stadium named after their current head coach Bill Snyder to narrowly beat number 20 K-State, 20 – 14.  Coming into the game leading the nation in third down conversions, Auburn failed in their first five attempts.  K-State held Auburn to only 55 yards rushing in the first half, the fewest in the Malzahn era.  Auburn capitalized on K State’s mistakes, gaining a field goal after K-State fumbled deep in their own territory and again with an interception in the end zone.  K State helped even more missing a 22-yard field goal attempt in the third quarter.  It was a nail-biter for SEC fans on a Thursday night, but the Auburn Tigers remain undefeated in 2014.

Alabama

Yards, yards and more yards.  Bama put up some yards, 449 passing and 196 rushing, the most yards ever up on a Gators defense.  Alabama QB, Blake Sims threw for 445 yards, the second-best passing performance in school history.  Alabama beat Florida, 42 – 21, but both teams appeared at times to be competing for the sloppiest performance.  Alabama QB Blake Sims threw 1 interception and add to that mess the team fumbled three times. Not what we’re used to seeing with the highly disciplined Nick Saban coached teams in the past few years.  Florida’s Jeff Driskell was intercepted twice by Tide defenders and added another fumble to that.  To make it worse Alabama had 11 penalties for 80 yards.  All three of the Gators’ touchdowns came after turnovers.  In the third quarter Sims was out for a series with a hurt shoulder, but no problem, Jake Coker came into the game and filled the bill connecting with Amari Cooper for a 4-yard touchdown.  We covered this game last week on Shirley’s Picks PODCAST and nearly nailed the score.
